Dublin: C. Smyth, 1877. Presumed First Edition with 1877 on title page and no statement of printing. Hardcover. 18.5 x 12.5 cm. 138pp. Bound into blue cloth with decorations in black and gilt by Cavenagh (small bookbinder's label in rear). Inscribed: "With the author's compliments" on the title page. Some minor rubbing and fading to spine and edges. Small piece out of the center of the rear free endpaper and there is also a coaster stain to the rear endpapers. Very Good. Item #90799
This work are divided into three parts: "Dublin Doggerels", "Mongrel Doggerels", "Ariadne". The first two sections are collections of humorous verse while the final is a play; a "metrical drama in four scenes, being the vice-chancellor's prize poem for 1872, Trinity College, Dublin". Dublin Doggerels first appeared in the short-lived humor magazine "Ireland's Eye". Hamilton launched and editedseveral humor magazines including "Zoz or the Irish Charivari", "Pat" and "the Irish Diamond" in the 1870s & 1880s. Rare work.
