First English language translation, written by the Italian Communist leader between 1929 and 1935 while he was imprisoned by the fascists. He was released in 1935 on medical grounds and he passed away in 1937. The notebooks were smuggled out of prison and not published until 1947 (Quaderni del carcere) in Italian. This is the first American edition, published the same time as the UK edition.
