This work is a biography of Greek Neo-Pythagorean philosopher Apollonius of Tyana (circa 3 BC - 97 AD according to this author). It was originally commissioned by Julia Domna (died 217), the second wife of Roman emperor Septimius Severus and thought to have been a means of promoting pagan beliefs during a time of rising Christian influence (Britannica).
The 16th century saw many classics works translated into the vernacular from Latin and Greek. Francesco Baldelli also translated all of Caesar's histories as well as works by Polidoro Virgili and Flavius Josephus, into Italian. Rare work.
