Bruccoli found "Dearly Beloved" in the F. Scott Fitzgerald papers at the Princeton University library and published it in the Fitzgerald / Hemingway Annual 1969. He notes that "Although it is impossible to date the story with confidence, stylistic evidence places it late in Fitzgerald's career; and Beauty Boy's interest in Plato and the Rosecrucians recalls the Negro fisherman in 'The Last Tycoon' the novel Fitzgerald was writing at his death in 1940.
