London: Longmans, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1817. First edition. Hardcover. 28.5 x 22.5 cm. viii, ii pages, [72]pp, lxxii color plates. Bound into marble boards, rebacked with newer leather spine. Complete with 72 color engraved color of various skin conditions and diseases. Each plate is preceded by a 1 page description as well as a tissue guard. Plates are lovely condition without tears or foxing. A bit of foxing to the tissue guards. Some rubbing to bottom of boards. Bateman was a pupil of Robert Willan, considered the founder of dermatology as a medical specialty, and became the most noted dermatologist in London after Willan's death. The present work is considered the first atlas of dermatology and it was published in parts from 1814-1817; this being the first edition in book form. It includes 34 plates for Willan's "On Cutaneous Diseases" with the addition of 38 new plates depicting the later genera of dermatoses. "Includes important descriptions of herpes iris and of eczema due to external irritation. Plate lxi represents the first description of molluscum contagiosum, but... the diseases was probably noticed by Tilesius about 1793" (Garrison-Morton).
