Complete with 5 plates including frontispiece and fold-out map. Closed tear to head of spine. The book is water damaged. This effects the tops of the boards and tops of the pages. Most of the pages effected show some wavyness at the top, other pages which include two of the plates show darkening. Stain noticable to foredge. Previous owner's contemporary inscription on front fixed endpaper. Ninth edition first done in 1853, this printing done in 1854. A working copy. Fair. Item #65098
Originally published between 1830-1833, each edition of Lyell's work was updated with new information and revisions. Lyell's popularization of Huttonian theory - "the present is the key to the past" is considered one of the most important books in the study of geology.
