The American interests here studied are cultural and religious, and activities in these fields had three major consequences: the establishment of schools which culminated in the Syrian Protestant College, now the American University of Beirut; the printing in Arabic of textbooks and religious literature, chief among which was the American translation of the Bible; and the creation of a substantial native Protestant community.
