Solovetsky Islands (Russia)

This catalogue is collection of books relating to Russia, especially the Solovetsky Islands. The Solovetsky Islands are an Archipelago in the White Sea and part of modern day Russia. It was the site of a remote monastery in use from the 15th century to the modern day and later as a Bolshevik forced labor camp. Many of these titles focus on the forced labor camp at Solovki that led to the death of hundreds of thousands of political dissidents, criminals, and others during the Soviet regime. Aleksandr Solzheinitsyn called it the “mother of the Gulag”. The titles below include interesting photobooks, an atlas and several accounts of escapes from the Solovki gulag variously in English, Russia, and French languages.
