Stokes delivered these lectures on opticsat the University of Aberdeen in 1883-85. The earliest work Stokes did on light centered on the nature of the ether and the wave theory of light. His explanation of fluorescence from studying the blue color exhibited at the surface of an otherwise colorless solution of sulfate of quinine when viewed by transmitted light awarded him the Rumford Medal. Stokes also made contributions to pure mathematics relating to real world physical problems, hydrodynamics and the relationship of science to religion. Uncommon work. DSB XIII.
