Terrence (190 B.C. - 159 B.C.) was a North African slave of a Roman senator, Terentius Lucanus. He was the author of 6 major palys. His style deviated from earlier dramatic form. He avoided monologues, favoring dialogue that was more like ordinary conversation, devoid of flamboyance. His prologues were essays in literary crticism, and he was deeply concerned with unity in the plot, sometimes incorporating passages from other plays. He moved drama in the direction of realism and was influential on the writings of Cicero, Horace, and the early Christian Church fathers. This edition of his plays was prepared for German students with extensive notes explaining the most difficult passages, the Latin idiomatic expressions, and Greek roots of som eof the words. A long preface in German is a commentary on pre-Christian authors and their works.
